New E.U. rules for transporting animals come into force on 5th January 2007.

The new rules are aimed at improving the welfare of animals during transport and include

particular requirements for anyone moving live vertebrate animals in connection with an

economic activity.

From 5th Jan 2007, any person wishing to transport animals as part of a business or

commercial activitiy will need to be authorised as an animal transporter.

Anyone requiring a transporter authorisation should apply using the following forms

.A short journey application form WIT1 if you transport animals on journeys over 65kms

and up to eight hours or,

.A long journey application form WIT2 if you transport animals on journeys of eight hours and

over.

Transporter Authorisations will be issued by the State Veterinary Service (svs)

The forms are currently free of charge and last for five years.
